You could easily pack a landfill with the number of waste removal companies that exist today. From metal bins to flimsy bags, separating the junk from the gems is an arduous task. That’s why industry innovator Antonio Mammone knew that in order to shine he needed to design a product and business model that differentiated itself in a stagnant market. Enter U-Box-It: A unique idea that raises the bar with a revolutionary bin that satisfies eco-conscience clients. “While most people are trying to think outside the box, I focused my efforts on the box itself,” Mammone famously says of the delivery, pick-up and disposal concept that’s cleaning up the GTA.

U-Box-It is a new concept in junk removal. This one-time-use, recyclable container was designed for do-it-yourself home renovation and clean-up, to fill the gap between municipal curbside collection and the large metal commercial container, both of which require a large area. U-Box-It was designed to be lightweight and compact: consumers purchase it flat packed and it will fit in most cars and minivans. The versatility of U-Box-It allows a user to load the container in the garage, backyard or alleyway, or fit it in tight places such as the service elevators of condominiums, apartments or office buildings.

The name is a little clunky. The color is a little loud. But the bright yellow U-Box-It “disposable bin” took home a bronze award in this year’s IDEA competition, winning in the design strategy category. The cubic-meter box is aimed at the do-it-yourself (DIY) crowd with neither pickup truck nor space enough for a commercial-size dumpster, and is made of weather-proofed corrugated recycled cardboard. Said DIY-ers (at least those in Toronto, where the scheme is currently running) can dump up to 1,000 pounds of anything from drywall to old curtains in the box, call U-Box-It, and have the box picked up and taken to the nearest waste processing facility, where the box itself is also recycled.
